MACON, GA – Mercer used its eighth-inning magic to complete a weekend series sweep against Bradley (5-7).  The Bears (10-9) got a game-winning hit in the eighth inning for the second game in a row to start Saturday's doubleheader, then put the series finale out of reach with a 5-run outburst in the eighth inning of the nightcap Saturday at OrthoGeorgia Park.

Mercer earned a 12-11 win in Saturday's opener after Brandon Michie launched a 3-run home run in the eighth inning and the Bears scored in seven of their eight offensive innings in the second game Saturday to earn a 15-5 win in the series finale.

Bradley built a 7-1 lead in the opener, but found itself having to rally after the Bears plated eight runs in the fourth inning.  After the Braves did, in fact, rally on a Connor O'Brien home run in the fifth and three more runs in the sixth to move ahead, 11-9, they fell victim to Friday's hero.

Brandon Michie, who delivered the game-winning, 2-run single in the eighth inning of Friday's 11-9 Mercer victory, came through again in Saturday's first game by launching a 3-run home run in the eighth inning to set the final score.

O'Brien led Bradley's 13-hit attack in the opener by going 4-for-5 with two RBIs.  Ryan Vogel (2-for-5, 2 RBI) continued his torrid hitting, while Eli Rawlinson (2-for-3, 3 RBI) and Carson Husmann (2-for-5, 3 RBI) joined O'Brien in the "multiple-hits-with-a-home-run" club.

Closer Theron Denlinger (0-1) suffered the loss by surrendering the home run to Michie, the first hit he has allowed this season.

After Mercer scored two runs in each of the first two innings in Saturday's second game, the Braves pulled even with four in the third, only to see the Bears continue their offensive production.  Collin Price homered in the third to put Mercer in front for good, 5-4, and the Bears steadily pulled away by scoring once more in the fourth, three times in the sixth and once in the seventh before their 5-run outburst in the eighth.

The Braves will have five days to regroup, before returning to the road to face an old Missouri Valley Conference rival.  Bradley will visit Creighton for a 3-game series next weekend at TD Ameritrade Park Omaha, site of the College World Series.  Friday's series opener is slated for a 6:30 p.m. start.

NOTES:  After going 2-for-5 in Saturday's first game, CF Ryan Vogel was 1-for-4 with a walk in the nightcap, extending his hitting streak to nine games … Vogel saw his streak of consecutive games with multiple hits snapped at six games, but he has reached base safely multiple times in seven straight games … Dan Bolt was 1-for-4 with a walk in the opener and 1-for-2 with two walks in the second game, pushing his on-base streak to all 12 games this season and 18 consecutive games, since going 0-for-4 in his four plate appearances Feb. 20, 2020 at Middle Tennessee … The Braves and Bears had split their six previous games before this weekend's series: Bradley won 2-of-3 in 2015 and Mercer took 2-of-3 in 2017.
