Game Recap: Baseball | | Bobby Parker, Associate AD for Communications
PEORIA, IL – There were 688 days in between them, but Bradley Baseball has won consecutive home games.  The Braves (6-9) used 7.2 innings of scoreless work from four relievers and four RBIs from junior DH Eli Rawlinson to earn a 7-2 win against SIU Edwardsville (11-10) in their home opener Tuesday night at Dozer Park.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the typical late start to the home season, Bradley had not played a home game since beating Illinois State by the same 7-2 score May 12, 2019.  The Braves had played 28 games away from home spanning three seasons and in eight states in the 688 days since that 2019 win against the Redbirds.

Freshman LHP Kaden Krueger made his first collegiate start Tuesday night for the Braves and surrendered two runs, one earned, on three hits and two walks in 1.1 IP.  After surrendering a leadoff home run in the second, followed by a walk, a strikeout and a single to start the second, Krueger gave way to senior RHP Ryan Hodgett with a 2-0 count on Cougars SS Ethan Copeland.  Hodgett responded to the 2-on, 1-out, 2-0 count situation with three consecutive called strikes to retire Copeland and he got CF Brett Johnson to fly out to end the inning.

The quartet of Hodgett, LHP Troy Hickey (W 1-2), Nick King and Theron Denlinger kept the Cougars off the board the rest of the way, combining to allow five hits, while striking out seven.  Denlinger loaded the bases with one out in the ninth on three singles, but responded with consecutive strikeouts to end the game.

Bradley began its rally in the third inning when Jackson Chatterton lofted a high fly ball into shallow right centerfield that landed in between three SIUE players for a double.  He eventually came home on a 2-out ground ball off the bat of Dan Bolt that Copeland bobbled for an error.

Quinn Waterhouse (L 0-2) relieved SIUE starter Brant Glidewell to start the fourth inning and he ran into immediate trouble by walking Carson Husmann and Keaton Rice on nine pitches.  Alek Kubik relieved, but walked TJ Manteufel to load the bases with no outs and Rawlinson took advantage with a smash off SIUE third baseman Raul Elguezabal for a 2-run single and a 3-2 Bradley lead.

Rawlinson added a 2-run double inside the bag at third base to cap a 3-run fifth inning, pushing Bradley's lead to the final margin, 7-2.

Rawlinson finished 2-for-4 with his four RBIs and Husmann was 2-for-3 with a walk, two runs scored and a RBI to pace Bradley's 8-hit attack.  Steven Pattan led SIUE's offensive effort by going 3-for-4.

Bradley will not have time to adjust to the home environment as the Braves will return to the road for a 4-game Missouri Valley Conference series at Missouri State starting Thursday night at Hammons Field.
