Bizarre Ninth Inning Favors Host Bears

Game Recap: Baseball | | Bobby Parker, Associate AD for Communications
SPRINGFIELD, MO – Bradley freshman 2B Jackson Chatterton was 3-for-4 with a home run, but it was not enough to tip the scales of a bizarre ninth inning toward the visitors as host Missouri State (9-9, 1-0 MVC) opened Missouri Valley Conference play with a 5-4 win against the Braves (6-10, 0-1 MVC) Thursday night at Hammons Field.

The teams entered the ninth inning tied, 4-4, and Chatterton started a 2-out rally for the Braves with a single to right field.  It appeared the Braves had loaded the bases after Ryan Vogel reached on an error and a third strike pitch to Brendan Dougherty caromed to the backstop.  Missouri State asked the umpires to review the dropped third strike, however, and the crew determined the pitch hit Dougherty's back foot during his check swing, resulting in a dead ball that made the third strike the final out of the top half of the inning.

Missouri State then scored the game-winning run in the ninth, despite swinging at only one pitch, a foul ball, the entire inning.   Taylor Catton (L, 0-2), who had cruised through 3.1 innings after relieving starter Jed Moscot with two outs in the fifth inning, surrendered a leadoff walk and hit the second batter of the ninth.  Reliever Grant Jausel uncorked a wild pitch to advance the runners, leading to an intentional walk to load the bases and set up a possible force out at the plate.  The Braves never got that opportunity, however, as the next pitch was a curve ball that caught pinch hitter Drake Baldwin on top of his helmet to bring home the walk-off run.

Bradley's freshmen provided most of the highlights for the Braves Thursday night, though, junior DH Eli Rawlinson did get Bradley's scoring started in the third inning.  Rawlinson doubled to open the frame, took third on a Chatterton single and scored on a wild pitch.

Freshman LF Carson Husmann kept the Braves within 2-1 when he threw a Missouri State runner out at the plate to end the bottom of the third.  Husmann then led off the fourth with a single, stole second, advanced to third on a Keaton Rice base hit and scored on a sacrifice fly by freshman SS TJ Manteufel.  Chatterton, who attempted to bunt earlier in his at-bat and started to show bunt before swinging, drilled a 2-run home run over the wall in right centerfield for a 4-2 Bradley lead.

The Braves did not get another hit until Chatterton's ninth inning single, however.

After giving up two runs in the first inning, Moscot worked in and out of trouble without any more damage until giving up a pair of solo home runs in the fifth inning.

The teams will continue their 4-game Valley series with a 2 p.m. doubleheader Friday, which is slated to begin with a 7-inning contest.  The series finale is scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday at Hammons Field.
