PEORIA, IL – Southern Illinois scored five runs in the first three innings and then held off a Bradley baseball rally in a 5-4 victory at Dozer Park on Friday night. The Braves are now 9-13 on the season and 3-5 in Missouri Valley Conference action, while the Salukis improve to 25-6 and 5-4 versus league foes.
 
Southern Illinois started the game strong and scored five runs in the first three frames to take control. The Salukis plated three in the first off a two-run home run before scoring another with a two-out single. SIU then added one in both the second and third innings for the 5-0 advantage.
 
Bradley pulled one back in the bottom of the third when Eli Rawlinson singled home Connor O'Brien for the 5-1 contest. Rawlinson then tripled O'Brien home in the fifth before scoring himself via a sacrifice fly for a 5-3 game.
 
The Braves continued their fight back and scored one additional run in the eighth inning, taking advantage of a two-out single from Brendan Dougherty. However, Bradley left runners on the corners to finish the eighth before leaving two more Braves on base in the ninth as the Salukis finished off the 5-4 victory in the four-game opener.
 
O'Brien led Bradley with three base hits in four plate appearances with his two runs scored. Rawlinson, meanwhile, was 2-for-4 on the night with two RBI and one run scored.
 
The schools continue the series tomorrow afternoon at Dozer Park with the first pitch of a two-game doubleheader slated for 1 p.m.
