Game Recap: Baseball | | Bobby Parker, Associate AD for Communications
PEORIA, IL – The Bradley baseball team swept a Missouri Valley Conference doubleheader against Southern Illinois on Saturday afternoon at Dozer Park, earning a 2-1 victory in the opener before a walk-off 3-2 win in the finale. The Braves improve to 11-14 on the year and 5-5 in Valley action, while the Salukis drop to 25-8 overall and 5-6 versus league foes.

The Braves pitching staff won the day, keeping one of the nation's top-scoring offenses in check during the sweep. Southern Illinois entered the weekend ranked first in Division I in runs scored – averaging 9.0 per game – but Bradley held the Salukis to just three runs in 16 innings of play with 11 hits on the day.

Junior pitcher Matt Hamilton led the Braves to victory in the opener as he pitched 6.2 innings, allowing only one run and six hits. His performance marked the first time this season in 32 games that Salukis were held under two runs in any single contest.

With Hamilton leading the way on the mound, the Braves scored the only two runs they would need in the bottom of the third. Freshman Jackson Chatterton hit a double to start the rally and then scored on an error by the SIU shortstop. Senior Dan Bolt then scored classmate Brendan Dougherty with a double for the 2-0 BU advantage.

The Salukis pulled one back in the top of the fourth, taking advantage of a leadoff double and then scoring after a pair of groundouts to the right side of the infield.

However, Hamilton and closer Theron Denlinger prevented the Salukis from drawing even. Southern Illinois had two runners reach base in the both the fifth and seventh frames, including men on the corners with two outs in the ninth. The Braves were able to secure the victory, though, after the SIU runner took second and BU catcher Keaton Rice caught the man on third in a rundown after a faking a throw to second. Dougherty tagged him out for the 2-1 winning score.

Hamilton improved to 3-0 with the victory, while Denlinger recorded his third save of the season.

The Salukis didn't waste much time getting on the scoreboard in the second game of the doubleheader, scoring one run in the first inning after a pair of singles and an error. The Braves answered in the third inning when Dougherty doubled in Ryan Vogel for the 1-1 game.

Southern Illinois reclaimed its advantage in the fifth with a solo home run only for the Braves to once again pull even in the sixth. TJ Manteufel led off the inning with a double down the line and then scored when O'Brien singled him home for the 2-2 game.

O'Brien then became the hero in the ninth inning when his solo shot with one out cleared the left field fence and walked off the 3-2 Bradley victory.

Grant Jausel and Taylor Catton combined to allow just two runs and five hits in nine innings of play, striking out 13 Salukis in the process. Jausel pitched four innings and struck out a career-best eight batters in the start before Catton pitched five innings of relief to improve to 2-2 on the season. Catton retired the last 13 batters he faced, allowing only two hits and one run with zero walks.

The schools wrap up the series tomorrow afternoon at Dozer Park with a 1 p.m. first pitch.
