Game Recap: Baseball | | Bobby Parker, Associate AD for Communications
PEORIA, IL – Juniors Brooks Gosswein and Theron Denlinger combined for a two-hit shutout to lead the Bradley baseball team to a 6-0 victory against visiting Southern Illinois on Sunday afternoon at Dozer Park. The Braves clinched the series victory with the win and improve to 12-14 overall and 6-5 in Missouri Valley Conference action, while the Salukis drop to 25-9 and 5-7 versus league foes.

Overall, the Bradley pitching staff dominated one of the nation's top offenses during the series. Against a SIU offense that entered the weekend ranked first nationally in runs and were scoring 9.0 per game, BU combined to yield just eight runs in the four-game series – allowing the Salukis to hit a combined .157 in 34 innings of work.

The Braves saved their best for last with Gosswein on the mound. The junior pitched eight shutout innings to improve to 2-0 on the season, allowing only two baserunners with an infield single in the fifth and a two-out walk in the seventh. Denlinger then pitched a scoreless ninth for Bradley's second shutout of the season (and the first time the Salukis were kept off the scoreboard this year).

Bradley got on the scoreboard in the third inning for all the offense the team would need on the day. The Braves had their leadoff hitter reach base via an error and then followed up with three-consecutive singles later in the frame to take a 2-0 lead.

TJ Manteufel doubled the BU advantage in the fifth inning, sending a pitch over the left-field fence for his third home run of the campaign and a 4-0 lead. The Braves then tacked on two more runs in the eighth inning with Keaton Rice singling in Connor O'Brien and then scoring himself on a Ryan Vogel single.

Winners of three in a row, the Braves will now look to carry their momentum into non-conference play, taking a break from Valley action with a four-game series against Western Illinois next weekend. The in-state foes are set to begin the series on Friday at Dozer Park with a 6 p.m. first pitch.
