Game Recap: Baseball | | Bobby Parker, Associate AD for Communications
PEORIA, IL – Evansville scored two runs in the top of the ninth inning to secure a 5-3 victory over the Bradley baseball team in the series opener on Friday night. The Braves are now 8-12 on the season and 2-3 in Missouri Valley Conference action, while the Purple Aces improve to 17-11 and 2-3 versus conference foes.

Freshman TJ Manteufel led the Braves with three hits, while senior Brendan Dougherty and sophomore Connor O'Brien both added two hits and an RBI to anchor the BU offense.

Evansville struck first in the contest, taking advantage of an error in the third inning for a 1-0 lead. The Aces then doubled their lead when Tanner Craig homered an inning later for the 2-0 score.

Bradley cut its deficit to one in the fifth inning when Ryan Vogel bunted Manteufel home for the 2-1 tally. Evansville, however, reclaimed its two-run advantage in the seventh, once again scoring an unearned run after a two-out triple.

The Braves would draw even in the eighth inning. After Vogel opened the inning with a walk, Dougherty pulled BU within one with a double. Evansville was able to get the next batter out only for O'Brien to hit a double and tie the contest at three.

The tie game would be short-lived, however, as Evansville scored two runs in the top of the ninth. With a runner on second and third, Simon Scherry hit a two-out single through the right side for the go-ahead runs. Bradley was able to get the leadoff hitter on in the bottom half of the inning but could not advance him as the Aces held on for the 5-3 victory.

Jed Moscot pitched seven innings for the Braves, allowing only one earned run with five hits. Theron Denlinger suffered the loss for BU, pitching the two-run ninth inning.

The schools are scheduled for a doubleheader at Dozer Park on Saturday afternoon with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m.
