Game Recap: Baseball | | Bobby Parker, Associate AD for Communications
DALLAS – Bradley Baseball came out swinging in its Missouri Valley Conference showdown against No. 28 Dallas Baptist and the Braves came away from the first of consecutive doubleheaders against the league-leading Patriots with a split Friday night at Horner Ballpark.

With the teams combining for nine home runs on the day, the Braves (17-18, 9-8 MVC) took the series opener, 8-4, but host DBU came back for a 5-2 win in the 7-inning nightcap.  In a continued effort to beat a late weekend rain forecast, the teams will play another doubleheader Saturday, a pair of 9-inning games to begin at 2 o'clock at Horner Ballpark.

GAME 1 RECAP: Bradley 8, at DBU 4
The teams each hit three home runs in a 3-inning stretch from the third through the fifth innings, but the Braves took better advantage of an unsually off day from DBU starter Dominic Hamel (9-2) to earn the series-opening win.

Freshmen middle infielders TJ Manteufel and Jackson Chatterton both banged out two hits to pace Bradley's 8-hit effort.  Manteufel got the scoring starting by blasting his fourth home run of the year in the third inning and the Braves followed with a Connor O'Brien RBI double and Keaton Rice's first homer of the year, a 2-run shot, for a sudden 4-0 lead.

Freshman CF Ryan Vogel ignited another 4-run rally in the fourth by launching his first career home run.  The Braves extended their lead by getting a RBI ground out from Connor Manthey in between a pair of run-scoring wild pitches.

Bradley starter Matt Hamilton did not allow a hit through the first three innings, but the Patriots touched him for a trio of homers in the fourth and fifth innings to pull within 8-4.

Braves relievers Taylor Catton and Theron Denlinger worked in and out of trouble in the late innings, but the bullpen duo combined to strand six DBU runners in the last three innings.  Catton walked the first two hitters in both the seventh and eighth innings, but he got three straight fly outs to end a scoreless seventh and Denlinger needed just six pitches to help the Braves escape the eighth.  The Patriots used a pair of 1-out singles and a wild pitch to put a pair of runners in scoring position in the ninth, but Denlinger recovered by by getting a strike out and a fly out to end the game and secure his fifth save.

Notes:  Senior 3B Brendan Dougherty led off the game with a sharp single to centerfield, extending his on-base-safely streak to 30 consecutive games, while moving into a tie for fifth (Jacob Scahffer, 1995-97) in program history with his 222nd career hit …. O'Brien (.386) and senior RF Dan Bolt (.376) entered the game as the top two hitters in The Valley … Although they were a combined 1-for-4, they also each drew three walks to reach base safely seven times in their 10 combined plate appearances.

GAME 2 RECAP:  at DBU 5, Bradley 2
Bolt gave Bradley the early lead by launching a solo home run in the first inning, but Jackson Glenn drilled a 2-run home run in the third inning to give DBU its first lead of the day, 3-2, and the Patriots held on to salvage the split.

After Andrew Benefield hit the day's ninth home run, a solo shot in the sixth, the Braves threatened in the seventh by bringing the tying run to the plate with one out.  Jackson Chatterton started the rally with a bunt single and Dougherty drew a walk, but Manteufel went down swinging and Bolt, who had reached base safely in five straight plate appearaces, grounded out to end the game.

Notes:  Junior Grant Jausel worked a career-best 5.2 innings and threw a career-high 109 pitches as Bradley's starter in the nightcap … Dougherty extended his on-base streak to 31 games with a high fly ball that the DBU centerfielder lost in the lights for a double … The 31-game streak equals the third-longest by a Brave in this millennium, matching a streak by Max Murphy in the first 31 games of 2014 … Brad Canada reached safely in 35 consecutive games from May 22, 2004-April 24, 2005 and Chris Godinez reached safely in the final 33 games of Bradley's 2015 NCAA Regional season.
