Game Recap: Baseball |
PEORIA, IL – Junior Carl Valk became the sixth player in Bradley baseball history to hit three home runs in a single game but Illinois State prevailed in the opener at Dozer Park, 6-4, in 10 innings. The Braves are now 18-20 on the season and 10-10 in Missouri Valley Conference, while the Redbirds improve to 22-30 and 12-13 versus league foes.

Valk's three home runs – the first three of his Bradley career – matched the school standard for home runs and total bases in a game, last accomplished by Max Murphy on March 1, 2014 against Dayton. He also becomes the first Brave on record to hit a home run from both sides of the plate in a single game.

The junior first gave BU the advantage in the third inning when his shot cleared the left-field fence. The Redbirds quickly squared the game at one in the top of the fourth, taking advantage of a leadoff double and then scoring on a two-out wild pitch.

Valk then put Bradley back in front with a solo shot in the bottom of the fifth only for Illinois State to answer back in the top of the sixth, scoring on a one-out double.

The Braves then had multiple chances to move ahead but couldn't take advantage of their opportunities. Bradley had a runner on third with one out in both the seventh and ninth innings but both times, Illinois State escaped the jam to send the game into extra innings.

The Redbirds then took advantage of their chances in the 10th, scoring four unearned runs with the help of the international tiebreaker rule and two Bradley errors for a 6-2 advantage. Not done yet, Valk hit his third home run of the game to lead off the bottom half of the inning, clearing the right-field wall for a two-run shot but the Braves were unable to pull even in the 6-4 final.

Matt Hamilton posted a quality start for the Braves on the mound, allowing just two runs and five hits in seven innings of work, striking out nine Redbirds to just one walk.

The schools continue their three-game series at Dozer Park tomorrow with an 11 a.m. first pitch.
