Game Recap: Baseball |
PEORIA, IL – The Bradley baseball team clinched a top-four seed and a bye to the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament double-elimination round with a 4-3 victory against Illinois State on Friday. The Braves are now 19-20 on the season and 11-10 in conference play, while the Redbirds are 22-31 and 12-14 versus league foes.

Senior Brendan Dougherty and junior Keaton Rice combined to go 4-for-7 on the day with one walk and three RBI to lead the Braves to victory. With his two hits, Dougherty extended his on-base streak to 35 games – matching the longest streak by a BU student-athlete since the 2000 season.

Rice got things started in the second inning, hitting his second home run of the season. The junior sent a two-run blast over the right-field fence for the early Bradley advantage.

Illinois State pulled one back in the top of the third with a solo shot before squaring the contest at two in the fifth, following a one-out triple with an infield single for the 2-2 game.

Bradley, however, would quickly reclaim its lead in the bottom of the fifth. The first three Braves all reached base to start the inning and BU would take advantage when Dougherty scored a run with a walk before a wild pitch extended the lead to two.

The Braves would only allow two hits in the final four innings – a pair of doubles that scored one in the ninth – to secure the 4-3 victory and first-round bye.

Brooks Gosswein earned the win on the mound, pitching 5.2 innings and allowing six hits and two earned runs. Jed Moscot relieved Gosswein and retired all seven hitters he faced before Theron Denlinger earned his sixth save of the season in the ninth.

The schools wrap up the season series tomorrow at Dozer Park with an 11 p.m. first pitch.
