Game Recap: Baseball |
PEORIA, IL – The Bradley baseball team hit three home runs and freshman Taylor Catton pitched six scoreless innings in relief as the Braves secured a 3-1 victory and series win against I-74 rival Illinois State on Saturday.

With the victory, the Braves finished the regular season with a 20-20 record and 12-10 mark in Missouri Valley Conference action. Bradley's 12 conference victories are its most since winning 13 games in 2007, while the team's .545 winning percentage is its highest 2006 (.550). The Redbirds finished the regular season with a 22-32 record and a 12-15 mark versus league foes.

Senior Brendan Dougherty and juniors Eli Rawlinson and Keaton Rice provided the offense for the Braves in the winning effort, all hitting solo home runs.

Dougherty got things started with a leadoff shot. Playing in his final career game at Dozer Park, the senior sent a ball over the centerfield wall – his second of the season – for the early 1-0 Bradley advantage. His home run also extended his on-base streak to 36 games – now the longest streak by a Brave this millennium.

Illinois State tied the contest in the third inning, scoring on a double after reaching base with a hit by pitch but that was all the offense the Braves would allow on the day.

Rawlinson put Bradley back in front in the fourth with his seventh homer of the season before Rice added an insurance run in the eighth with his third blast of the year – and second in as many games.

After Grant Jausel allowed just one run in the three innings to start the game, Catton took it from there and shut down the Redbirds to improve to 5-3 on the season. The freshman allowed just three hits and zero runs in six innings of work – retiring the last 11 batters he faced to secure the 3-1 win.

The Braves now turn their attention toward the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament. Bradley earned a bye to the double elimination round of the tournament, finishing as either the two or three seed depending on conference action elsewhere Saturday afternoon.
