Game Recap: Baseball | | Bobby Parker, Associate AD for Communications
PEORIA, IL – Senior 3B Brendan Dougherty extended his hit streak to 15 games as Bradley (15-16, 7-6 MVC) split a doubleheader against visiting Valparaiso (12-24, 7-11 MVC) Friday night at Dozer Park.  The Braves rolled to a 9-5 win in the opener, but managed just two hits in a 2-1 setback in the 7-inning nightcap.

The teams are scheduled to play single games at 1 p.m. both Saturday and Sunday, but may switch to an 11 a.m. doubleheader Saturday in an effort to beat expected rain across the region as the weekend progresses.  As scheduling decisions are made, updates will be posted at BradleyBraves.com and on the Bradley Baseball social media accounts.

Game 1 Recap | Bradley 9, Valparaiso 5
The Braves got contributions from up-and-down the lineup on the way to a 9-5 win in Friday's series opener.  All nine Bradley hitters had at least one hit and either one run scored or one RBI.

After Valparaiso opened the game with a leadoff home run from Steven Fitzsimmons, Bradley junior Carl Valk put the Braves in front for good in the home half of the first by driving home three on his first career triple.  Sophomore DH Connor Manthey was 2-for-4 with a pair of 2-out RBI singles in the first and second innings and Dougherty was 2-for-5 with a pair of runs scored.

Freshman RHP Taylor Catton (4-2) relieved starter Dalton Mall in the third inning and earned the win, despite allowing five hits in his 3.1 innings.  Catton allowed only two runs, one earned, on those five hits.  Senior RHP Jed Moscot earned his first save of the year by allowing one unearned run on four hits over the final 3.0 innings.

Game 2 Recap | Valparaiso 2, Bradley 1 – 7 innings
The scoring in Friday's night cap came down to a pair of bloop hits.  Dougherty dropped in a RBI double on the left field line in the third inning, but the Valparaiso Baseball Team countered with a 2-run bloop single deep in the hole between shortstop and third in the fifth inning to complete the game's scoring.

Valpo stranded 10 batters through the first four innings and was on verge of leaving three more on the bases in the fifth after loading them up, courtesy of a trio of walks by Bradley reliever Nick King.  Lefty Troy Hickey got Fitzsimmons to pop up, but with the middle infielders shaded up the middle, the ball landed on the edge of the outfield grass between short and third for the deciding, 2-run single.

Dougherty's third-inning bloop double and Dan Bolt's leadoff single in the fourth inning were the only hits the Braves could muster against the combination of Valpo righties Easton Rhodehouse and Jon Tieman (2-3).  The Braves made it interesting in the seventh inning as Manthey drew a one-out walk and pinch-hitter Eli Rawlinson added a 2-out walk, but Tieman recovered by getting Ryan Vogel to ground out to end the game.
