Mikey Howell Named Valley Newcomer of the Week

After leading the Bradley men's basketball team to a pair of wins over Loyola and Drake, graduate student Mikey Howell was named Missouri Valley Conference Newcomer of the Week on Monday.

Against the top two teams in the MVC preseason poll, Howell averaged 13.0 points, 4.0 rebounds and 2.5 assists, while shooting 58.3 percent from the field and 57.1 percent from 3-point range. He opened the week with his first double-digit scoring game of the season – tallying 12 points in a victory over Loyola. He then topped that versus Drake, setting season-highs with 14 points and three made 3-pointers to go with a game-high four assists.

In 26 games this season, Howell is second on the team and seventh in the Missouri Valley Conference with 3.3 assists per game. He also adds 3.9 points per game – shooting 40.5 percent from the field and 39.5 percent from 3-point range.

Howell is the second Brave to earn the league's Newcomer of the Week award this season, joining four-time recipient Terry Roberts.

The hottest team in the Valley as winners of seven of their last eight games, Howell and the Braves are back in action on Tuesday night against Southern Illinois. First tip at Carbondale is set for 7 p.m.
