Game Recap: Men's Basketball |
Carbondale, Ill. – The Bradley men's basketball team saw its three-game winning streak snapped on Tuesday night, falling short in a second-half rally of a 65-57 setback at Southern Illinois. The Braves are now 15-12 on the season and 9-6 in Missouri Valley Conference action, while the Salukis improve to 14-13 and 7-8 versus league foes.

Junior Terry Roberts led the Braves with 11 points, while sophomore Rienk Mast also scored in double figures with 10 points to go with a game-high nine rebounds. Graduate student Mikey Howell led BU with four assists off the bench.

The teams traded runs to start the game with Bradley scoring the first 11 points only for Southern Illinois to answer with a 14-0 run. The Salukis then added a further 16-0 run to turn a 16-15 contest into a 32-15 lead. A three-pointer at the buzzer would extend the SIU advantage to 41-22 at the break.

The Southern Illinois advantage would reach as many as 25 points, 52-27, before the Braves made their move. Bradley slowly chipped away at the deficit, aided by a 12-1 spurt of its own, to pull within nine, 59-50, with under five minutes remaining. A 3-pointer from junior Ville Tahvanainen would pull BU even closer as the Braves trailed by just five points, 62-57, with under 90 seconds left. Bradley, however, was unable to get any closer as SIU secured the 65-57 win on its home court.

The Braves made 41.4 percent of its field goals on the night with a 5-of-16 clip from 3-point range. The Salukis, meanwhile, converted 51.1 percent of their field goals, matching BU from beyond the arc at 5-of-16.

Bradley looks to return to its winning ways on Saturday afternoon, hosting I-74 rival Illinois State. Tipoff at Carver Arena is set for 1 p.m.

Game Notes: During its previous eight games (with seven wins), Bradley allowed opponents to shoot just 38.5 percent before SIU's 51.1 percent outing on Tuesday … Tahvanainen has made 48.6 percent of his 3-pointers during the last nine games (18-37) … The Braves committed 17 turnovers and now are averaging 15.7 in Valley defeats (11.4 in wins) … Bradley was attempting to win three straight at SIU for the first time since a five-game run from 1984 to 1988.
