Game Recap: Baseball |

Normal, Ill. – The Bradley baseball team hammered four home runs in an 8-2 victory over Illinois State on Sunday, winning the series over its I-74 rival. The Braves improve to 13-20 overall on the season and 5-4 in Missouri Valley Conference action – just one game off the conference lead through three weekends – while the Redbirds drop to 15-19 and 3-6 in league play.

Senior Keaton Rice, sophomores Carson Husmann and Ryan Vogel and redshirt freshman Peter Hansen all hit home runs in the winning effort. Vogel led BU with three hits and three runs scored on the afternoon, while Rice finished with a team-best four RBI.

Senior Nick King continued his strong recent form, winning his third-straight decision after allowing just two runs in 6.1 innings of work.

The Braves did not waste much time getting on the scoreboard in the rubber match of the three-game series, scoring two first-inning runs. Rice drove in his first run of the game with a sacrifice fly that scored Vogel before Husmann launched his team-leading ninth home run of the season (and fourth in the last seven games).

Bradley extended its lead when Vogel connected on his third homer of the season in the third frame for a 3-0 BU advantage.

Behind a strong start from King, the Braves maintained their 3-0 advantage until the Redbirds finally broke through in the sixth with a two-out home run of their own. Sophomore Taylor Catton relieved King in the seventh and stranded two runners with a pair of strikeouts to get out of the jam. Illinois State then advanced the tying run to third with just one out an inning later but a strong defensive play from Catton and catcher Adam Brian again kept BU in front. ISU attempted a safety squeeze down the first-base line but Catton was up for the challenge, flicked the ball back to his battery mate and Brian applied the tag on a leaping runner for the key out.

Bradley then put the game out of reach with five runs in the top of the ninth. After the first two batters reached base, Rice launched his third home run of the season for a 6-2 Bradley lead. Two batters later, Hansen added a solo shot for his second homer of the campaign and Bradley would add one final run on a bases-loaded walk for the 8-2 tally.

Catton then pitched a perfect ninth inning to earn his second save of the weekend and fourth of the season.

After winning its second-straight Valley series, Bradley takes a break from conference play with a midweek matchup against Illinois. The Braves host the Illini on Wednesday at Dozer Park with a 6 p.m. first pitch.
