Watson Title Highlights Opening Day at MVC Outdoors

DES MOINES, IA – Junior George Watson beat the heat and pulled away in the final mile to win the Men's 10,000m Friday, highlighting the opening day of action for Bradley in the 2022 Missouri Valley Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Drake University's Drake Stadium.

Led by Watson's personal-best time of 29:43.60, the fifth-best time in program history despite Friday's heat, the Bradley men scored 17 points in the 10,000m and sit in fourth-place in the team standings on the strength of the night's final event. In addition to Watson's 10 points as the event champion, Alec Danner (30:25.76) added four points with a fifth-place finish, followed by Billy Hauenstein (30:52.28) in seventh and Matt Aho (31:01.48) in eighth.

Sophomore Kyra Koontz got the day started on a positive note for the Braves, posting 2,618 points through four rounds of the Women's Heptathlon. Currently in fifth-place overall after the first day, Koontz posted the second-best time in the 100m Hurdles and the third-best distance in the shot put.

Both of Bradley's entries in the Men's 1,500m, Max Dieterich and Aidan Donohue, advanced to Sunday's event finals, while Wilma Nielsen also advanced in the Women's 1,500m. Although he did not advance, freshman Eli Rieker ran a personal-best 22.53 in the Men's 200m prelims Friday.

Saturday's action for the Braves is slated to begin at 10:30 am with Koontz competing in the final three events of the Women's Heptathlon - long jump, javelin and 800m. Saturday's running events will include the prelims of the Women's 100m Hurdles, Women's 400m Dash, Men's and Women's 100m Dash and the Men's and Women's 800m. Saturday's schedule also will include the Women's Long Jump Trials and Finals, while the day will conclude with the finals of the Men's and Women's 3,000m Steeplechase.
