Box Score INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- Junior setter Ashley Vance (Loda, Ill./Paxton-Buckley-Loda) made her first start of the season after missing the first three contests of the year due to injury, and helped spark the Bradley Volleyball team to a 3-1 (20-30, 30-25, 30-28, 30-18) victory at IUPUI Monday afternoon.
The Braves owned a season-best hitting .271 hitting percentage in the match and posted their first victory of the season to improve to 1-3 on the season. Vance started the match and split the setting duties with freshman Eileen Hillary (Washington, Ill./Washington). Vance totalled 25 assists, one ace and three digs, while Hillary added 23 assists, nine digs and one block assist.
Bradley had a balanced attack against the Jaguars with junior Lindsay Stalzer (Kewanee, Ill./Kewanee) owning a match-high 19 kills. Stalzer hit .371 (19 kills - 6 errors - 35 attacks) and added eight digs and six blocks. Junior Briony Hammet (Biloela, Queensland, Australia/Gladstone) also had a good outing with a season-high 14 kills.
Freshman Bethany Dulle (Bloomington, Ill./Mt. Pulaski) had a season-best nine kills and led the team with five service aces and 11 digs. Sophomore Amber DeBroux (Byron, Ill./Byron) added a spark off the bench, recording five kills on 12 attacks for a .417 hitting percentage.
“Ashley's presence gave us a boost,” head coach Scott Luster said. “We played with a lot more energy and got great efforts from Briony (Hammet) and Bethany (Dulle). Lindsay (Stalzer) struggled early, but took the match over towards the end.”
After hitting just .125 in the opening game, the Braves hit .315 in the final three frames to pull out their first victory of the season. Bradley hit an impressive .500 (16-3-26) in the fourth game to seal the win with a 30-18 victory.
IUPUI (2-3) was led by Michelle Sobocinski's 17 kills. She was one of four Jaguar players to finish with 10 or more points.
Bradley returns to action Friday at the Butler Invitational in Indianapolis, Ind. The Braves will face Jacksonville State Friday at 4 p.m., before taking on Western Illinois and Butler on Saturday.
