CHARLESTON, Ill. -- Freshman catcher Ryan Eigsti (Eureka, Ill./Eureka H.S.) went 3-for-4 and drove in two runs, leading Bradley (27-18) to an 8-0 victory at Eastern Illinois (15-38) in the non-conference baseball finale for both teams Tuesday afternoon at Coaches Stadium.
Senior left-hander Derek Goins (Schererville, Ind./Lake Central H.S.) scattered three hits over his six innings of work and three Braves relievers finished off the team's fourth shutout of the season. Goins improved to 5-6 this season and moved into a tie for sixth place on the school's all-time victory list with his 19th career win.
After Eastern Illinois starter Juske held the Braves scoreless on one hit in the first three innings, Bradley got all the offense it needed in the fourth by scoring three runs against Panther reliever Budde (3-6). Paul Rice led off the fourth by drawing a walk from Budde, then went to third on a Brad Canada single and scored on a Peter Malinowski sacrifice fly for the game's first run. Pinch-hitter Justin Carr then reached on an error that allowed Canada to move to third. Adam Uscicki successfully executed a squeeze bunt to put the Braves up 2-0 and Zach Norris followed with a run-scoring single back through the box to complete the 3-run inning.
Tuesday's win ended Bradley's third 3-game losing streak of the season and gives the Braves some momentum heading into their final Missouri Valley Conference series of the season. Currently locked in a six-way battle for the final three spots in next week's ConAgra Foods MVC Tournament, Bradley will host second-place Wichita State Thursday, Friday and Saturday at O'Brien Field. The first two games of the series will begin at 6 p.m. and Saturday's regular-season finale will begin at one o'clock.
