Box Score 2 RICHMOND, Ky. -- For the second time in as many weeks, Bradley sophomore hurler Rob Scahill (Lombard, Ill./Willowbrook North H.S.) allowed just one hit in 6.0 scoreless innings and senior reliever Chris Wright (Rochester, Ill./Rochester H.S.) pitched a perfect seventh inning to complete Bradley's first shutout of the season as the Braves (3-3) opened Sunday's doubleheader at Eastern Kentucky with a 4-0 victory. The Colonels (4-1-1) bounced back with an 11-2 win in Sunday's nightcap to take the 3-game weekend series, 2-games-to-1.
The reigning Missouri Valley Conference Pitcher of the Week following his 1-hit performance in 6.0 scoreless innings Feb. 23 at Murray State, Scahill (2-0) was equally as dominant Sunday at Eastern Kentucky, holding the Colonels hitless until allowing an infield single with two outs in the sixth and matching his career-high with eight strikeouts. After allowing a swinging bunt single to lead off last week's game at Murray State, Scahill went 11.2 innings before surrendering his second hit of the season when Clint Seymour beat out a single to shortstop in the sixth.
The Braves got all the offense they needed in the third inning when junior right fielder Colby Luttrell (Kincaid, Ill./South Fork H.S.) came through with a 2-run, bases-loaded single. Sophomore catcher Kevin Sullivan (Elmhurst, Ill./York H.S.) led of the fourth with Bradley's first home run of the season and Luttrell scored the game's final run in the fifth when he came home on a wild pitch.
As the coaching staff continues to monitor Scahill's pitch count as he returns from a medical redshirt season last year, Wright relieved to start the seventh and set the Colonels down in order to complete the 1-hit shutout.
Eastern Kentucky used four pitchers to turn the tables on the Braves in the nightcap, however. Starter Michael Mulholland (2-0) allowed one run on one hit in his 4.0 innings and three Colonels relievers combined to allow only one more run on two hits over the final three innings. Senior Lendsey Thomson (0-1) suffered the loss for the Braves by allowing eight runs, but only three earned, on seven hits in 2.1 innings.
The Braves grabbed a quick 1-0 lead in the first. After three straight one-out walks, Mulholland plunked shortstop Tommy Fitzgerald (Lenexa, Kan./Mill Valley H.S.) with a two-out pitch to bring home Grant Escue (Washington, Ill./Washington H.S.). Mulholland escaped bigger damage, however, when he picked off Luttrell at second base to end the inning.
After scoring two in the bottom of the first inning to take the lead, Eastern Kentucky took control by scoring two more in the second and seven in the third. Three Bradley errors in the two innings helped set the stage. Dylan McMaine came through with a 2-run double in the second, while Aaron Barrows and Matt Davis both hit 2-run singles in the third.
Bradley will return to action Wednesday afternoon by visiting Saint Louis for a single game at 2 o'clock.
