Box Score PEORIA, Ill. -- Bradley junior righthander Tyler Thornton threw eight scoreless innings for his first win of the year and junior centerfielder Dan Brewer went 3-for-4 at the plate and tied his own O'Brien Field record with three stolen bases, leading the Braves (22-19) to an 8-0 victory against Chicago State (5-37) Sunday evening at O'Brien Field. The Braves completed their first four-game non-conference series sweep since March 29-30, 1984 versus Minot State at the old Meinen Field.
Thornton (1-2) scattered seven hits and struck out three with no walks in his longest outing of the year. Senior Lendsey Thomson worked around a Jonathan Wilson double in the ninth by striking out the side to complete Bradley's second shutout win of the season.
The Braves grabbed the early lead by scoring the game's first run in the second inning. Jim Clayton got Bradley's first hit with a one-out single in the second, and after Mike Brumleve hit into a fielder's choice for the second out, Nick Mitidiero followed with a line drive double off the left field wall. Chicago State catcher Preston Pires could not handle the shorthop throw home as Brumleve scored from first.
Brewer led off the fourth with a single up the middle, stole second and third and scored on a passed ball for a 2-0 lead. The Braves stretched the lead to 4-0 in the fifth after Tommy Fitzgerald was hit by a pitch with one out. He took second on a wild pitch and scored on Grant Escue's bloop double into shallow centerfield. Brewer followed with a sharp single to left to plate Escue.
The Braves broke the game open with four more runs in the eighth, beginning with a sacrifice fly by Colby Luttrell. Pinch-hitter Chris Gordon followed with a 2-run triple, his first career extra-base hit as a Brave, then scored the game's final run on a balk by Chicago State reliever Patrick Hernandez.
Bradley ran its winning streak to five straight overall with its 10th consecutive win against other teams from Illinois. The Braves, who are 21-3 againt in-state rivals since the start of the 2007 season, will wrap up their 10-game homestand with a Tuesday doubleheader at 4 p.m. versus Valparaiso at O'Brien Field, then will visit Illinois State in a three-game Missouri Valley Conference series next weekend at Redbird Field.
