Box Score
PEORIA, Ill. --
Creighton scored 11 of its 12 runs with two outs and Bradley committed four errors in the field as the Bluejays took the second game of a three-game Missouri Valley Conference baseball series by topping the Braves 12-3 Saturday afternoon at O'Brien Field.
Just like Friday's opener, Creighton (20-7 overall, 6-2) took an early 1-0 lead thanks in part to Bradley's struggles in the field. Robbie Knight led off the game and promptly stole second base. Knight moved to third base on a groundout and eventually scored on a wild pitch to give the Bluejays a 1-0 lead.
For the second consecutive game, Bradley (12-14 overall, 3-5 MVC) responded with two runs in the bottom half of the first inning. Junior Grant Escue (Washington, Ill./Washington/Stanford) drew a one-out walk and advanced to third base when junior Dan Brewer (Brookfield, Ill./Lyons Township) followed with a single down the right field line. Junior Colby Luttrell (Kincaid, Ill./South Fork), who hit a two-run homer in the first inning Friday, drove in Escue with a double to the gap in right center field. Brewer scored to give the Braves a 2-1 lead when junior Jim Clayton (Chatham, Ill./Chatham Glenwood/Southeast Missouri State) lifted a sacrifice fly to center field.
Sophomore pitcher Brad Altbach (Northbrook, Ill./Glenbrook North) settled down after surrendering a run in the first to retire Creighton in order in the second and appeared to be under control after retiring the first two batters of the third inning. The Bluejays had other plans as Michael Lam ignited a seven-run inning for Creighton when he ripped a two-out solo homer to left field. A pair of singles was followed by a run-scoring double off the bat of Vicente Cafaro that gave the Bluejays a 3-2 lead.
T.J. Roemmich walked to load the bases and Joe Servais would clear the bases when he smashed a grand slam to left field to push the Creighton lead to 7-2. Creighton wasn't done in the inning, however, as Brett Mieras doubled and scored the seventh run of the frame on an Elliot Soto single up the middle to give Creighton an 8-2 lead.
Brewer, who is 4-for-7 in the series with four runs scored, led off the bottom of the third with a single and moved to second on a failed pick off attempt. He came around to score when Clayton belted a double to left center to extend his current hit streak to a team-best nine games and cut the deficit to 8-3.
Creighton would push four more runs across in the top of the fourth inning to take a commanding 12-3 advantage. Senior pitcher Chris Wright entered the game in the top of the fourth and retired the first two batters he faced, but Creighton struck for four more two-out runs. Steve Winkelmann got things started with a double down the left field line and Cafaro followed with a walk. Both players came around to score on a Bradley fielding error. Servais was a hit by a pitch to put runners at first and second and Mieras hit a single to center field. Servais and Roemmich both came around to score on the play, however, due to a BU throwing error as the Bluejays pushed four unearned across in the inning.
Bradley managed just four base runners in the final six innings of play and neither team scored after Creighton's four-run fourth inning.
Junior Tyler Thornton (Minier, Ill./Olympia) had his best outing of the season for the Braves, entering the game in the fifth inning. Thornton tossed five innings of shutout ball, scattering four hits and striking out three. Altbach suffered the loss, falling to 1-4 on the year.
Zak Moore went 5.1 innings for Creighton in the win. He struck out one and walked two, while surrendering six hits and three earned runs. Roemmich picked up his first career save out of the bullpen for the Bluejays, tossing 3.2 shutout innings while giving up just one hit.
The Braves and Bluejays close out their three-game conference series Sunday with a 1 p.m. game at O'Brien Field.
