Game 2 Recap:
Bradley
used a five-run fifth inning to earn the doubleheader sweep Saturday, downing
the Fighting Sioux 7-2 in the nightcap.
Fourth-year junior righthander Rob
Scahill (1-0) turned in a strong performance in his first appearance in
nearly a month, while senior rightfielder Colby
Luttrell (3-for-4) and senior shortstop Tommy Fitzgerald (3-for-3) combined for six of the team's 12 hits.
The Braves
jumped on the board first in the nightcap, plating one run in the second
inning. After Adam Kimble flirted with a
gapper to start the second, catcher Kevin Sullivan found the gap in left center
for a one-out double. Luttrell followed
with an RBI single up the middle and continued on to second when centerfielder
Josh Lagein booted the ball. First
baseman Jim Clayton drew a walk to put runners at first and second with one out. Fighting Sioux pitcher Mike Lueck (1-5) prevented
further damage, however, by striking out Tim Scanlan swinging and Matt Fritz
looking to end the second.
Bradley
added to its lead in the fourth inning after loading the bases with one
out. Fritz delivered a sacrifice fly to
plate Luttrell for a 2-0 lead.
North Dakota got a gift run from the Braves in
the fifth inning. Andrew Gudmunson drew
a one-out walk, the first of the game by Scahill, then stole second. Following a strikeout, Scahill appeared to
get out of the jam when he got Josh Nelson to hit a fly ball to right centerfield,
but centerfielder Nick Mitidiero dropped the liner into the gap, allowing
Gudmunson to score and pull the Fighting Sioux to within 2-1.
Mitidiero
immediately made up for the error, however, hitting his second homer of the
season by lining the first pitch of the bottom of the fifth down the left field
line and around the fair pole. Luttrell
nearly gave the Braves two homers in the inning when he roped a two-out double
off the metal fence above the wall in the left field corner, chasing Lueck. David Spies relieved, but left-handed hitting
first baseman Jim Clayton greeted the lefty reliever with a soft single into
right field to bring home Luttrell for a 4-1 lead. Scanlan, also a left-handed hitter, drew a
walk to put runners at first and second.
Fritz followed with a sharp comebacker that Spies deflected, but Nelson's
throw to first from short was in the dirt and skipped to the wall, allowing
Clayton to score and Scanlan and Fritz both to advance an extra base. Fitzgerald broke the game open with a two-run
double for a 7-1 lead.
Making
his first start since March 6 due to an oblique injury, Scahill cruised through
the first five innings, allowing only one unearned run on three hits with six
strikeouts. After walking the first two
hitters in the sixth, Scahill got Andrew Marek to bounce into a double play,
but gave up an RBI single to Aaron Cook to end his day. Senior Tyler Thornton relieved with a runner
at first and two outs and got Gudmunson to fly out to end the rally. Thornton
then worked around a leadoff single in the seventh to close out the game.
