NORMAL, Ill. - Tyler Brown scored a game-high 21 points, leading Illinois State (15-9, 7-6 MVC) to a 78-48 win against Interstate 74 rival Bradley (6-19, 1-12 MVC) Saturday night at Redbird Arena.
With Bradley's big three scoring combination - Taylor Brown (5 points, 1-for-9 shooting), Dyricus Simms-Edwards (7, 3-12) and Walt Lemon, Jr. (8, 3-11) - held to 20 points on collective 7-for-32 shooting from the field, freshman guard Jalen Crawford was the team's leading scorer with a career-best 11 points.
Bryan Allen aided the Redbirds effort with 11 points off the bench, while John Wilkins chipped in with 10.
Bradley juggled its starting lineup, inserting junior guard Charonn Woods and Jake Eastman into the lineup for Lemon and Shayok Shayok, but the switch did not prevent the Braves from starting slow. Bradley shot just 26.9 percent in the first half, while Illinois State countered by hitting at a 53.8 percent clip to blow out to a 43-19 lead at halftime.
Starting the second half by going 0-for-7 prior to the first media timeout put the Braves into a 52-19 hole with 14:59 left. The Braves did not get their 20th point until Eastman sank two free throws with 14:37 left and missed their first 11 field goal attempts of the half before Lemon scored on a spinning layup with 11:20 remaining.
Bradley will return home to host Indiana State Wednesday night at Carver Arena. The 7 p.m. game will be televised locally on WTVP World.
