Game Recap: Baseball | | Bobby Parker, Associate AD for Communications
MACON, GA - Spencer Gaa was 4-for-5 with a triple, two runs scored and two RBI's from the second spot in the Bradley batting order, but Mercer's number two hitter, Alex Hanson, was 4-for-5 with three runs scored and three RBI's, leading the host Bears to an 11-10 win in the opening game of a weekend series Friday night at OrthoGeorgia Park.

After reaching on a fielder's choice in the bottom of the first, Hanson scored the game's first run on a Danny Edgeworth double.  The Mercer center fielder then added singles in the second and fifth innings, a 2-run double in the third and the second of consecutive Mercer home runs to open the seventh.

Trailing 10-6 after Hanson's seventh-inning home run, Bradley mounted a come back by scoring three times in the eighth and once more in the ninth. Gaa started the eighth-inning rally by legging out an infield single.  After Luke Mangieri followed with a base hit, Ian Kristan plated Gaa with a double and second baseman Andrew Ivelia added a 2-run single later in the inning to pull the Braves within 10-9.

The Bears took advantage of a leadoff double in the home half of the eighth, plating a needed insurance run for an 11-9 edge.

Luke Shadid drew a walk to open the ninth and advanced to third on Gaa's fourth hit of the game, a single up the middle.  Mangieri drove Shadid home with a sacrifice fly, but the Bears ended the game with a strike-out-caught-stealing double play as Gaa was thrown out trying to steal second when Kristan was caught looking on a 3-2 pitch.

In addition to Gaa and Mangieri (2-for-4), CF Andy Shadid (2-4) contributed to Bradley's 13-hit attack with multiple hits, a 2-run, inside-the-park home run in the seventh and a single in the eighth.

The teams are scheduled to continue their series with a 1 p.m. CT game Saturday and a noon CT contest Sunday, but snow is in the Georgia forecast later in the weekend, which may force the teams to play a doubleheader Saturday.  Sophomore LHP Ben Olson is scheduled to start the second game in the series, with Eric Scheuermann to follow in the finale.
