Game Recap: Baseball |
PEORIA, IL – Illinois State claimed the second game of the series in the I-74 rivalry, earning a 9-4 decision at Dozer Park on Saturday afternoon. The Braves are now 17-19 on the year with a 3-5 mark in Missouri Valley Conference action, while the Redbirds improve to 11-26 and 1-7 against league foes.

The Redbirds scored three runs in the top of the first to take an early lead they would not relinquish, putting together the advantage with four hits and a walk in the frame.

The 3-0 score would stand until the fifth inning when the Braves got on the scoreboard. A two-out triple by Evan Gruener scored Jean-Francois Garon for a 3-1 contest. Both teams added a run in the sixth – with a sacrifice fly by Derek Bangert scoring Luke Shadid – for a 4-2 game through six innings.

The seventh inning, however, secured the win for the Redbirds. Illinois State scored five runs in the frame, all with two outs. A bases-clearing double plated three for ISU before another double added two more. In the bottom half of the inning, the Braves loaded the bases with no outs but were only able to score one as Illinois State claimed a 9-3 lead. Bradley added one more run in the eighth for the 9-4 final tally.

Brendan Dougherty led BU at the plate with a 3-for-4 performance, knocking in one run, while Ian Kristan also had multiple hits with a 2-for-4 day. Alex Gray took the loss on the mound, giving up four earned runs in 6.1 innings of work.

The rubber game of the series is slated for tomorrow afternoon at Dozer Park. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. and the game can be seen live on ESPN3.
