Atlanta Challenge
Bradley 6, at Kennesaw State 4

KENNESAW, Ga. -
Luke Mangieri's first home run of the year gave Bradley the lead in the seventh inning and made a winner of freshman Brooks Gosswein in his college debut as the visiting Braves (2-1) completed the Atlanta Challenge with a 6-4 victory at Kennesaw State (1-3) Sunday at Stillwell Stadium.

A day after rallying to beat Georgia Tech, 10-7, Bradley overcame a 4-run deficit Sunday as a trio of Braves hurlers held Kennesaw State scoreless over the final five innings.

A freshman lefthander, Gosswein (1-0) relieved starter Sam Lund to start the fourth inning and allowed the Owls two runs in his first collegiate inning of relief.  The only runners he allowed in his final 2.1 innings, however, reached via errors.  He erased one with a double play to end the fifth inning and the other over ran second base on a wild pitch and was tagged out to end the sixth inning.

Bradley was hitless in its first three innings against Owls starter Brooks Buckler and then failed to score in the fourth, despite banging out three hits.

The Owls opened the door in the fifth inning, however.  After Keaton Rice and Luke Shadid hit consecutive 1-out singles, Buckler fanned Mangieri, but could not escape the jam after Andrew Ivelia reached on an error.  Jared Staples relieved, but Bradley designated hitter Derek Bangert greeted the lefty with a bases-clearing double to pull the Braves within 4-3.  Kennesaw State again went to its bullpen, but 2017 MVC Freshman of the Year Brendan Dougherty brought home Bangert with single against lefty Max Ryan to forge a 4-4 tie.

The hosts turned to their fourth pitcher, Luke Torbert (0-1) to start the seventh, but Mangieri hammered the first pitch he saw from the righty for a solo blast to right field and a 5-4 Bradley lead.  The Braves picked up an insurance run in the ninth when Luke Shadid doubled and scored on KSU's second error of the day.

While Gosswein earned the win, fellow relievers Brian Schrimmer and Boby Johnson were stellar out of the bullpen.  Also making his Bradley debut, Schrimmer entered in the seventh after Gosswein issued consecutive leadoff walks.  The junior right-hander induced consecutive ground balls, starting with a 4-6-3 double play, to help the Braves escape the jam.  After issuing a one-out walk in the eighth, Schrimmer came up with consecutive strikeouts to end another threat.

Johnson made his second relief appearance of the weekend and converted Bradley's first save opportunity of the young season by tossing a scoreless ninth.

Dougherty led Bradley's 10-hit attack by going 3-for-4, completing the opening weekend with a healthy .700 (7-for-10) average.  Luke Shadid reached safely three times by going 2-for-4 with a double, hit-by-pitch and stolen base.

The Braves will return to action with three games next weekend in
Nacogdoches, TX:  Friday versus South Dakota State, Saturday at Stephen F. Austin and Sunday against UT Arlington.
