Game Recap: Baseball |
Peoria, Ill. – Back-to-back home runs in the eighth inning by sophomore Carson Husmann and junior Connor Manthey led the Bradley baseball team to a 5-3 victory over nationally-ranked Dallas Baptist on Friday. The Braves' second-straight win versus the No. 16 Patriots clinches a series victory for BU and moves the team's record to 11-17 overall and 3-2 in Missouri Valley Conference action, while DBU drops to 22-12 and 3-2 in league play.

Trailing by two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning, junior Connor O'Brien and senior Keaton Rice both hit one-out singles to bring the go-ahead run to the plate. Dallas Baptist responded by bringing in closer Chandler Arnold – who entered the game ranked ninth nationally with eight saves this season. Husmann was up for the challenge, however, and sent the first pitch he saw over the right-field fence to put Bradley in front, 4-3. The three-run shot was Husmann's second homer in as many days and his team-leading seventh of the season.

Not to be outdone, Manthey quickly gave Bradley an insurance run when he sent the second pitch he saw over the left-field fence for his third home run of the year and a 5-3 BU advantage.

Senior Nick King then finished off his fourth scoreless inning of relief in the ninth – striking out two Patriots and drawing a groundout to second to secure the series win over nationally-ranked DBU.

Bradley mainly held the Patriots in check offensively throughout the game with DBU scoring off of defensive miscues and injuries. Dallas Baptist tallied the game's first two runs in the third inning with a two-out throwing error gave the visitors the early advantage.

The Braves pulled one back in the bottom half of the inning when O'Brien singled home Peter Hansen for the 2-1 ballgame. Dallas Baptist, however, would move back in front by two runs when Michael Mylott was injured on a diving attempt in the outfield and the Patriots were able to take advantage with an inside-the-park home run while he remained on the ground.

King, however, was able to tame the Patriots after that. The senior struck out two batters in his first inning of work in the sixth with two men in scoring position – a sign of things to come for the visitors. Overall, King pitched 4.0 innings of scoreless ball – allowing just two hits, while striking out five to improve to 2-3 on the season.

Senior Matt Hamilton allowed one earned run in 5.0 innings of work to start the game for BU.

Bradley now aims for the three-game sweep tomorrow at Dozer Park. First pitch between the Braves and No. 16 Patriots is set for 11 a.m.
