Game Recap: Baseball |
Valparaiso, Ind. – The Bradley baseball team scored in each of the first five innings and then held off a late rally to earn a 7-6 victory at Valparaiso in the series opener on Friday afternoon. The Braves earned their third-straight win to move into a tie for fourth place in the Missouri Valley Conference standings, improving to 17-25 overall and 8-8 in league play. The Beacons fall to 14-29 and 3-13 against conference foes.

Redshirt freshman Peter Hansen led Bradley with three hits on the day, while a trio of Braves each collected two RBI in the winning effort – junior Connor O'Brien and sophomores Carson Husmann and Ryan Vogel.

Sophomore Taylor Catton earned his third win of the season, pitching 6.0 innings in relief with seven strikeouts.

The Braves did not waste much time in grabbing the lead and rode their early momentum for the win. O'Brien hit a solo shot in the first frame for his 10th homer of the season and a 1-0 Bradley lead. Vogel then extended the advantage one inning later with a two-out, bases-loaded single that plated two for a 3-0 edge. Husmann added his 11th homer of the campaign in the third – a two-run shot – to stretch the BU lead to 5-0.

The Beacons scored three runs in the bottom of the third inning to pull within two but BU responded with runs in the fourth and fifth frames to move back in front by four, 7-3. O'Brien singled home a run before Connor Manthey doubled one in an inning later for a four-run advantage.

The 7-3 lead would hold until the seventh inning when Valparaiso attempted to fight back. A solo shot and a two-out RBI single pulled the hosts to within two, 7-5, in the seventh before the Beacons added another solo homer in the ninth for a 7-6 contest. Valpo then moved the tying run into scoring position with a two-out double but Catton was able to draw a pop up on the very next pitch to secure Bradley's third-straight victory.

Bradley now looks to clinch the series victory with a 1 p.m. first pitch tomorrow afternoon.
