Game Recap: Baseball |
Valparaiso, Ind. – Seniors Nick King and Troy Hickey combined for a five-hit shutout as the Bradley baseball team earned a 2-0 victory over Valparaiso on Sunday to win the weekend series. The Braves, who have now won four of their last five conference series, improve to 18-26 with the victory and 9-9 in Missouri Valley Conference play – taking over sole possession of fourth place in the league standings. Valparaiso, meanwhile, falls to 15-30 overall and 4-14 against MVC foes.

King, who allowed two or fewer runs in his eighth-straight appearance and fifth-straight start, again dominated the opposition as the senior pitched a career-best 8.0 innings – allowing only five hits to go with seven strikeouts in earning his fourth win of the season. Hickey relieved King in the ninth and retired all three batters he faced to earn his third save of the campaign.

With King on the mound, the Braves did all the scoring they would need on the day in the second inning. After back-to-back singles from Carson Husmann and Connor Manthey to open the frame, freshman Timmy O'Brien singled one home for the early lead. Two batters later, senior Carl Valk followed suit with another RBI single for the 2-0 advantage.

With the 2-0 edge, King retired 13 of the first 14 batters on the day and only twice allowed a Valpo runner to reach scoring position. After a leadoff walk in the ninth, Hickey would follow his starter's lead and induced a line out, foul out and fly out to secure the 2-0 victory.

Offensively, Manthey led the Braves with three hits on the day, matching his career high, while O'Brien collected the first multi-hit game of his career in the winning effort.

The Braves look to maintain their momentum with their final regular-season series of the year next weekend. Bradley opens a three-game set against Missouri State on Thursday at Dozer Park with first pitch slated for 6 p.m.
