Game Recap: Baseball |
Peoria, Ill. – The Bradley baseball team scored 33 runs in a doubleheader sweep over Missouri State on Friday afternoon, earning 15-10 and 18-5 victories. With the two wins, Bradley clinches a top-four seed for the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament and automatically advances to the double-elimination rounds in search of an NCAA Tournament bid.

The Braves finish the regular season with a 20-27 overall record and an 11-10 mark in MVC action – earning a winning record in four-straight Valley seasons for the first time in school history. The Bears drop to 25-26 overall and 8-13 versus league foes.

Sophomore Jackson Chatterton and junior Connor O'Brien led the offensive explosion in the doubleheader – each hitting a career-best six RBI in one of the victories, only the 13th and 14th recorded times a Brave reached the mark.

Overall, BU's 18 runs scored and 13-run margin of victory is the team's largest against an MVC school since 1996. Additionally, Bradley's 13-run win was its greatest against Missouri State in 115 all-time meetings.

Game One Recap
Bradley hit five home runs in the opener to earn a 15-10 win. Chatterton led BU with two round trips, while seniors Keaton Rice and Carl Valk and sophomore Carson Husmann each added one.

Bradley jumped all over the Bears from the start, scoring eight runs in the first two frames. A three-run shot from Chatterton gave Bradley a 4-0 lead through one before Husmann duplicated the feat one inning later for an 8-0 advantage through two.

Missouri State scored three runs in the fourth and fifth innings before Valk hit a solo shot in the bottom half of the fifth for a 9-3 contest. After the Bears plated one more in the sixth, Rice connected on his fifth home run of the season – a two-run shot – for an 11-4 edge.

The Bears would threaten and plated six runs in the top of the eighth to pull within a single score, 11-10. However, Chatterton ended any hope of a comeback with his second three-run homer of the game – and fourth of the season – as Bradley scored five in the home half of the frame to secure the 15-10 win.

Chatterton finished the game 3-for-6 with six RBI, while Rice went 3-for-5 with four RBI and three runs scored. Matt Hamilton earned his second win of the year on the mound, pitching 5.0 innings with three runs allowed and eight strikeouts.

Game Two Recap
The Braves again jumped on the Bears early with five second-inning runs in the second game of the doubleheader. Bradley drew four-straight walks to score two before O'Brien hit a bases-clearing double for the five-run lead.

Missouri State answered with two runs in the third before taking advantage of an error with three runs in the fourth to tie the game. Bradley, however, would answer with seven runs in the bottom half of the inning and 13 over the next three to secure the win.

Timmy O'Brien gave Bradley the lead for good with a double before Ryan Vogel and Connor O'Brien followed with a sacrifice fly and a run-scoring single for the 8-5 advantage. Rice then doubled O'Brien home and then scored himself when Connor Manthey sent a bomb over the left-field fence for his sixth homer of the season. Bradley added one more run via an error for the 12-5 lead through four.

Bradley added one more run in the fifth and then scored five in the sixth – highlighted by back-to-back doubles from Connor O'Brien and Keaton Rice that plated three – as BU cruised to its largest win over a Valley school since an 18-3 victory in the 1996 MVC Tournament against Northern Iowa.

Connor O'Brien led BU by going 3-for-5 with six RBI and two runs scored, while Rice was 3-for-5 with three RBI and two runs scored. Bradley's 7-8-9 hitters also combined for nine runs scored and reached base safely nine times – highlighted by Valk tying a school record with four walks in a single game.

Nick King earned his fifth win on the mound, while John Day collected his first career save by pitching the final three innings without allowing a run.
