Dallas Baptist Edges Braves in MVC Tournament Opener, 4-3

Springfield, Mo. – The fourth-seeded Bradley baseball team finally opened the 2022 MVC Tournament on late Thursday night but third-seeded Dallas Baptist scored a late run to prevail, 4-3. The Braves are now 20-28 on the year, while the Patriots improve to 34-20-1.
 
Senior Carl Valk and sophomore Carson Husmann both hit home runs for the Braves but it was an eighth-inning run that led to the DBU victory in the tournament opener for both teams.
 
The Patriots opened the scoring with a two-out single in the second before Bradley squared the game in the fifth. Valk sent his third home run of the season 429 feet down the right-field line for a 1-1 contest.
 
DBU quickly pulled back in front with two runs in the bottom of the fifth, scoring on a two-out single but Bradley answered one inning later. Husmann hit his team-leading 13th long ball – a two-run shot – over the center-field fence to square the contest at three through six.
 
The Patriots again took advantage of a two-out situation to score the go-ahead run two innings later. After a leadoff single and a one-out walk, DBU sent an 0-2 pitch to left field for the 4-3 advantage. Bradley then put two runners on base in the top of the ninth but were unable to take advantage as DBU held on for the one-run victory.
 
Bradley now turns around to face Missouri State in an elimination game for BU. The Braves square off with the tournament hosts on Friday afternoon at 3 p.m.
