VALPARAISO, IN. – Bradley Baseball held on to defeat the Valparaiso Beacons 11-10 on Sunday, winning their first conference series of the season.
Home Run City
The Braves put two runners on within the first three batters of the game to set up Hayden Miller for his ninth home run of the season to give Bradley a 3-0 lead. The Beacons responded in the bottom half of the inning with a two-run shot of their own and followed that up in the second inning with a solo bomb to tie the game.
Valparaiso hit a three-run homer in the third to take a 6-3 lead. That lead lasted for one inning, as the Braves rallied for six in the top of the fifth. Michael Quick's two-RBI single brought the game to within one, and Jaxon Schumacher's RBI single tied the game. Walker Buchanan's two-RBI double put the Braves up 8-6. AJ Garcia added an insurance run with a sacrifice fly to make the score 9-6.
Landon Lowe joined the home run party in the sixth inning, leading off with a solo blast to make it 10-6. Valparaiso answered in the seventh, tying the game with an RBI double, an RBI single, and a two-RBI single. Neither team scored in the eighth, and with two outs in the ninth for the Braves, Garcia blasted his third homer of the season to give the Braves an 11-10 lead.
Standout Performances for Bradley
Lowe had a phenomenal game, going 3-for-5 with a home run, an RBI, and two runs scored. Quick played a big role in Bradley's win, going 4-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored. Miller was 1-for-4 with a homer, three RBI, a run scored, a hit-by-pitch, and a stolen base.
Buchanan hit 2-for-4 with a double, a walk, and two RBI. Garcia came into the game at the top of the fifth as a pinch runner, and went 1-for-1 with a home run, two RBI, two runs scored, and a hit-by-pitch.
On the Mound
Gavin Thompson took the start for the Braves, pitching two innings while allowing three runs on four hits, walking one, and striking out two. Calen Scheider threw 4.1 innings of relief, yielding three runs on six hits while striking out three.
Josh Vaughn continued his impressive play as of late, throwing the final 2.1 scoreless innings, giving up one walk while striking out four.
Standout Performances for Valparaiso
Brayden Pleau hit 3-for-4 for Valparaiso while adding a home run, a walk, two RBI, and three runs scored. Spencer Boynton pitched two shutout innings of relief for the Beacons while allowing only three baserunners via hit-by-pitches.
