BRADENTON, Fla. -- The Bradley Baseball team started its Spring Break trip to Florida in cold fashion, dropping both ends of a doubleheader against Vermont (5-5) Saturday afternoon at the IMG Academy.  The Catamounts took the first game, 7-1, then dumped the Braves (4-6), 10-1 in the nightcap.

Bradley sophomore Rob Scahill entered Saturday's opening game with a 3-0 record, a 1.37 earned run average and a miniscule .155 opponent batting average, but the Catamounts touched the early Bradley ace for six runs, four earned, on eight hits in 5.0 innings.  Fellow sophomore Brad Altbach (1-2) was hit even harder to start the night cap, surrendering seven runs, all earned, on 12 hits in just 3.2 innings.

Vermont outhit Bradley 25-12 in the two 7-inning games.  In fact, Vermont's second and third hitters, Justin Milo and Ethan Paquette, together outhit the Braves, 13-12.  Milo completed the doubleheader 7-for-9 with six runs batted in, while Paquette went 6-for-8 with four RBI's.  Bradley freshman utility player Rob Elliott led the Braves by going 3-for-6, while junior Nick Mitidiero was a combined 2-for-5 with the team's only RBI.

After travelling throughout the day Friday, Bradley got off to a quick start in Game 1 by pushing across a run in the top of the first.  Junior third baseman Dan Brewer led off the game by drawing a walk and he scored on Mitidiero's one-out double.  Colby Luttrell popped out to second and Jim Clayton struck out to end the inning, however, starting a rough trend for the Braves.  Bradley did not score again until the bottom of the sixth in the second game and the Braves finished the day 1-for-17 (.059) with runners in scoring position.

Vermont took the lead with a pair unearned runs in the third.  Milo and Paquette both delivered 2-out, RBI singles in the third.  Milo then delivered a 3-run home run in the fourth to cap a 4-run inning and break the game open.

In the nightcap, Milo hit a one-out double in the top of the first and came home on a Paquette single to give the Catamounts a lasting lead.  Vermont plated four more runs in the third, which started with a Milo single.

Bradley scored its run in the sixth, compliments of Vermont's only error of the day.  Pinch-hitter Chris Gordon hit a one-out single.  After Mike Brumleve was hit by a pitch to put runners at first and second with one out, Nick Popescu followed with a ground ball to first.  But when Vermont first baseman Kyle Henry hit Brumleve in the helmet in an attempt to start a double play, the ball ended up in the outfield, allowing Gordon to come around for Bradley's only run of the game.

The Braves will continue its play at the IMG Academy Sunday when they take on Maryland-Baltimore County in a 1:30 p.m. (CST) game.  Monday's game against Central Connecticut State has been changed from a morning contest to a 2 p.m. (CST) start.  Bradley also is scheduled to play Ohio State Tuesday (2 p.m.) and Miami-Ohio Wednesday (9:30 a.m.).
