Box Score CARBONDALE, Ill. ? Bradley junior right fielder Colby Luttrell drove in a career-best six runs and junior closer Kori Jensen set the single-season school record with his sixth save as the Braves (16-15, 7-5 MVC) completed a weekend sweep of Missouri Valley Conference rival Southern Illinois (18-15, 3-6 MVC) with an 11-6 victory Sunday afternoon at Abe Martin Field.
The Braves jumped ahead early with a 4-run first inning and never looked back, despite yielding 17 hits to the host Salukis. Sophomore right-hander Brad Altbach (3-4) earned his second win of the weekend by allowing one run on five hits in 3.1 innings through the middle of the game. With Bradley leading 8-5 with one out and a runner at first in the seventh inning, Jensen relieved Altbach and worked the final 2.2 innings to earn his record-breaking save. Michael Christl (2005) and Altbach (2007) shared the single-season record for saves with five each entering the weekend, but Jensen tied the mark in Saturday's 4-3 win before claiming the record outright Sunday.
Luttrell, who was 3-for-6 at the plate, put Bradley on the board with a 2-run double in the first. He added a another run-scoring double in the second, a 2-run single in the sixth that gave the Braves a difference-making 8-4 lead and an RBI ground out to cap a three-run ninth inning.
The first four hitters in the Bradley lineup ? Nick Mitidiero (2-5, 2 runs); Grant Escue (1-for-5, 2 runs, 1 RBI); Dan Brewer (2-for-5, 3 runs, 1 RBI); and Luttrell (3-for-6, 1 run; 6 RBI) ? combined for eight hits, eight runs and eight runs batted in. Third baseman Rob Elliott added a 3-for-5 performance as the Braves worked over seven Saluki pitchers for 15 hits. SIU starter David Kington took the loss by surrendering Bradley's first three runs in just two-thirds of an inning.
Bradley will try to carry the momentum of four straight Valley wins into a non-conference doubleheader Tuesday when the Braves visit Wisconsin-Milwaukee for a 2 p.m. twinbill. The Braves will host Missouri State in a three-game Valley set next weekend at O'Brien Field, beginning with a 6 p.m. opener Friday.
