Box Score WINTER HAVEN, Fla. ? Bradley pitchers Brad Altbach and Mike Derby combined on a one-hitter and shortstop Tommy Fitzgerald tied the single-game school record with three doubles, leading the Braves (4-7) to a 5-1 victory against Central Michigan in the second game of their Spring Break trip Sunday morning at Chain of Lakes Park.
Altbach cruised through the first four innings, but ran into trouble in the fifth when he injured his hip flexor. Altbach surrendered four of his five walks in the fifth, allowing Central Michigan's only run, before giving way to Derby (1-0). The freshman left-hander from Bartlett (Ill.) High School product tossed 4 2/3 hitless innings, striking out four, to close out the game and earn his first career victory. Altbach is expected to be available when the Braves open Missouri Valley Conference play next weekend at Missouri State.
Redshirt freshman Brad Kimball (Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley H.S.) made the most of his first career start Sunday by putting the Braves on the board first with a bases-loaded, two-run single in the second inning. One out later, Fitzgerald legged out the first of his three doubles, driving home catcher Kevin Sullivan for a 3-0 Bradley lead.
After Sullivan and second baseman Matt Fritz both were hit by pitches in the fourth, Fitzgerald ripped his second double to bring home both Bradley runners for a 5-0 Braves lead. Fitzgerald, who upped his batting average to a team-best .385 with his 3-for-4 performance, added his third double of the day leading off the seventh. Fitzgerald became the 16th Bradley player to hit three doubles in a game, an achievement most-recently accomplished by current Florida Marlins farmhand Ryan Curry March 1, 2007 at Tennessee Tech.
After the Braves split the first two games of their trip to Florida against a pair of Mid-American Conference foes, first-year Bradley head coach Elvis Dominguez will face one of his former Ohio Valley Conference rivals when Bradley takes on Jacksonville State in a 12:30 p.m. (ET) game at Chain of Lakes Park. Following an off day Tuesday, Bradley will close out the Florida trip with a pair of games Wednesday, 9:30 a.m. against Eastern Illinois and 1 p.m. against Hartford.
