Box Score
PEORIA, Ill. - Creighton left-hander Ty Blach threw 8.0 solid innings and finished with six strikeouts as the Bluejays (16-13, 5-7 MVC) earned a 12-3 Missouri Valley Conference victory over the Braves (11-19, 4-8 MVC) Sunday afternoon at O'Brien Field. Blach's performance also helped give Creighton the 2-1 series victory.
Creighton jumped on Bradley senior right-hander Brad Altbach (Northbrook, Ill./Glenbrook North H.S.) in the top of the first with five runs on two hits. After an error and two walks loaded the bases, Trever Adams ripped a bases-clearing double to right-center to give the Bluejays a 3-0 lead. Altbach struck out Creighton's next hitter for the first out of the inning, but Scott Thornburg followed with a two-run homer to left on the 10th pitch of his at-bat to put the Bluejays up 5-0.
Creighton added single tallies in the second, third, fourth and fifth to go ahead 9-0, while Blach retired 15 of Bradley's first 16 batters to start the game. Senior catcher Kevin Sullivan (Elmhurst, Ill./Oakton J.C./York H.S.) broke up Blach's bid for a perfect game with a leadoff single in the bottom of the fifth, but the freshman southpaw quickly regained his groove and retired the next three batters to finish the frame.
The Braves finally broke through in the bottom of the sixth with two runs on two hits. Freshman outfielder Christian Segar (Mendon, N.Y./McQuaid Jesuit H.S.) opened the inning with a single and moved to third on a double by freshman shortstop Jason Leblebijian (Arlington Heights, Ill./Prospect H.S.). Senior second baseman Matt Fritz (Northbrook, Ill./DePauw University/Glenbrook North H.S.) followed with an RBI groundout, while sophomore third baseman Rob Elliott (Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley H.S.) added an RBI sac bunt to make the score 9-2.
Creighton and Bradley traded runs in the seventh and the Bluejays tacked on two more in the ninth for a final score of 12-3.
Sullivan and Leblebijian each had two hits and scored one run. Altbach (0-3) took the loss on the mound for the Braves, allowing six runs (five earned), three hits and three walks in 2.0 innings of work.
Bradley will return to action Wednesday, April 21 with a non-conference double-header against Wisconsin-Milwaukee at O'Brien Field at 5 p.m.
