NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Bradley pitchers held down both Quinnipiac and Belmont on 10 combined hits, while outfielder Isaac Smith provided the go-ahead runs in both games, leading Bradley (9-2) to a pair of wins Saturday at E.S. Rose Park.
Bradley started the day with a 3-1 win against Quinnipiac, then capped Saturday's action with a 5-2 victory against host Belmont. The Braves will face both teams again Sunday, 10 a.m. against Quinnipiac, immediately followed by another matchup against the Bruins.
Bradley 3, Quinnipiac 1
Elliot Ashbeck (4-0) won his fifth consecutive start, dating to last season, and centerfielder Isaac Smith was 2-for-3 with a home run, leading the Braves to a 3-1 win against Quinnipiac in Saturday morning's round-robin opener at E.S. Rose Park.
The game remained scoreless until one out in the bottom of the fifth, when Smith broke through against Quinnipiac starter Thomas Jankins (1-1) by launching his first home run of the season. Chris Godinez, who reached base safely in four of his five plate appearances, followed with a walk and came around to score on Tyler Leffler's 2-out double.
The 2-0 lead was all the offense the combination of Ashbeck and closer Matt Dennis needed. Ashbeck did not allow a hit until the fourth inning and wound up allowing the lone run on four hits in 6.2 innings. Dennis entered with two outs and a runner on second in the seventh inning and secured the final seven outs to earn his third save of the year.
Bradley finished the game with an 8-5 advantage in hits as seven Braves collected at least one hit.
Bradley 5, at Belmont 2
After host Belmont (3-7) cruised to a 14-4 win against Quinnipiac (2-4) in Saturday's second game, Bradley pitchers Steve Adkins (2-1) and David Koll combined on the the staff's second 5-hitter of the day in a 5-2 win against the Bruins Saturday evening.
Batting in the No. 9 position, Smith again came up big at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a double, two runs batted in and a stolen base.
For the 10th time in Bradley's 11 games, the Braves scored first, using three first-inning singles to take a quick, 1-0 lead. First baseman Paul Solka followed hits by Godinez and Ian Kristan with a 2-out single to center to plate the first run.
After Belmont got the run back with a home run in the second inning, Smith put the Braves ahead for good in the fourth by coming through with a 2-out, RBI single to center field, plating left fielder Evan Gruener, who had drawn a 1-out walk and stole second. Godinez followed Smith's base hit with a RBI double for a 3-1 lead.
The Braves tacked on two insurance runs in the eighth when Allan Beer hit a 2-out, RBI triple and Smith followed with a run-scoring single.
Adkins allowed two runs in 6.0 innings, scattering five hits and walking four, while striking out seven. Senior left-hander David Koll earned his first career save in dominating fashion by fanning six in 3.0 hitless innings.
