Box Score MILWAUKEE - Reserve first baseman Nick Unes delivered a game-winning sacrifice fly in the 12th inning, lifting Milwaukee (26-15) to a 6-5 win against Bradley (29-12) Wednesday evening at Henry Aaron Field.
The Braves overcame a slow start, a 3-run deficit and the loss of the top two hitters in the order to force extra innings by scoring single runs in the sixth, eighth and ninth innings. Leadoff hitter Chris Godinez extended his streak of reaching base safely to 23 games by drawing a pair of walks, before going down with a leg injury in the sixth inning. Isaac Smith, the regular center fielder and fourth-leading hitter in the Missouri Valley Conference, did not play due to illness.
First baseman Paul Solka hit a sacrifice fly in the sixth inning to pull the Braves within 5-3, catcher Drew Carlile hit a 2-out RBI single in the eighth and shortstop Tyler Leffler came through with the game-tying single with one out in the ninth. The Braves had a chance to take the lead after Elliot Ashbeck followed Leffler's hit with a single to right to put runners on the corners, but Solka lined out to left field to end the rally.
Bradley had two on with one out in the 10th, but came up empty, stranding its 10th and 11th runners of the game.
After Milwaukee raced out to a 5-2 lead in the third, a quartet of Bradley pitchers held the Panthers in check for the next eight innings. Making his second career mound appearance, freshman Allan Beer cruised through the 11th inning, but ran into trouble in the 12th after Mitch Ghelfi led off the inming with a double into the left field corner. After getting a strikeout, a ball four wild pitch to Tell Taylor put runners on the corners for Unes, whose fly ball to center field was deep enough to plate Ghelfi with the winning run.
Bradley will return to the road for a 3-game weekend series at Indiana State, starting with a 5:30 p.m. (CST) first pitch Friday.
