Game Recap: Baseball |
Peoria, Ill. – The Bradley baseball team split a doubleheader to open its conference series with Indiana State on Saturday – falling in the opener, 8-5, in 12 innings before responding with a 4-3 victory in the nightcap. The Braves are now 15-25 on the season with a 6-8 mark in Missouri Valley Conference play, while the Sycamores are 23-15 overall and 8-6 versus league foes.

Junior Connor O'Brien raised his season average to .409, leading Bradley with five hits in the two contests. The first baseman also extended his on-base streak to 38 games – tying the longest streak by a Brave during the last 20 seasons (Brendan Dougherty also reached base in 38-straight games last season).

Game One Recap
Three runs in the top of the 12th gave the road team the 8-5 victory. A sacrifice fly allowed Indiana State to take the lead before a two-out single added a pair of insurance runs.

Sophomore Connor Manthey gave the Braves the early advantage in the contest with his first career triple scoring Jackson Chatterton in the second inning. Indiana State took its first lead of the day with a two-run homer in the top of the fourth only for BU to immediately respond when Jack Lincoln's solo shot squared the game at two in the bottom half of the inning.

The teams then both scored three runs in the fifth for a 5-5 contest. A double and back-to-back sacrifice flies gave the visitors the lead only for BU to answer right back. Freshman Cal McGinnis doubled Manthey home before Keaton Rice hit a two-RBI single for the 5-5 contest.

The bullpens then traded scoreless frames before Indiana State finally struck in the 12th.

O'Brien led BU with a 3-for-6 game, while Manthey and McGinnis also added two hits.

Game Two Recap
Bradley earned the victory in the nightcap, scoring one run in the bottom of the eighth to break a 3-3 deadlock. O'Brien hit a one-out single before Rice followed up with a ground-rule double to put two in scoring position. Sophomore Carson Husmann then drove O'Brien in with a sacrifice fly to right field for the 4-3 lead.

Senior Troy Hickey would pitch around a leadoff walk in the ninth, striking out the final Sycamore batter to secure his second win of the season and the 4-3 Bradley victory.

The teams would trade runs early in the game. The Braves would again strike first when Ryan Vogel scored on an errant throw by the ISU catcher in the opening frame. The Sycamores would answer in the second with a sacrifice fly before a double by Carl Valk scored Adam Brian in the bottom of the inning for a 2-1 tally. However, Indiana State would again respond, scoring an unearned run for a 2-2 game through three innings.

Both teams would then add one run in the fifth. Indiana State would hit a one-out single for its only lead of the day only for O'Brien to answer with a two-out single that drove in one for the 3-3 contest.

The Bradley pitching staff would then hold the Sycamores off the scoreboard for the final four innings. Matt Hamilton pitched a season-best seven innings and struck out a career-best 11 batters before Hickey pitched two scoreless frames – allowing the one-run eighth inning to lead to a Bradley victory.

The schools are now set for a rubber game tomorrow afternoon with first pitch at Dozer Park set for 3 p.m.
