Game Recap: Baseball |
Peoria, Ill. – Sophomore Carson Husmann hit a three-run homer in the seventh inning to lift the Bradley baseball team to a 5-3 win over Indiana State on Sunday in a rubber contest of a key three-game Missouri Valley series. With the win, the Braves improve to 16-25 on the season and 7-8 in MVC action, while the Sycamores drop to 23-16 and 8-7 versus league foes.

Needing a win to stay within striking distance of a first-round bye for the MVC Tournament, Bradley found itself trailing, 2-1, in the bottom of the seventh. After the Sycamores retired the first two Braves, junior Connor O'Brien hit a two-out double to the gap before Indiana State elected to intentionally walk Keaton Rice. Husmann would make ISU pay as he sent the third pitch of the at bat over the leftfield wall, giving Bradley the 4-2 lead with his team-leading 10th homer of the season.

The Braves still had work to do, however, to seal the victory. Indiana State would score one run via a bases-loaded walk in the top of the eighth to pull within one of BU. One day after earning the win on the mound, Troy Hickey would then get Bradley out of the jam, though, striking out a Sycamore batter to leave them loaded and keep BU in front.

Bradley would add one insurance run in the bottom of the eighth when Carl Valk singled home Jackson Chatterton and then Hickey would work around a two-out error to pitch a scoreless ninth, earning his second save of the season.

Senior Nick King earned a no-decision on the mound despite not allowing a single Indiana State hit in the first six innings. The Sycamores took the lead in the fifth frame when they plated one after a BU error. The Braves quickly squared the game in the bottom half of the fifth when Ryan Vogel hit a solo home run – his fifth of the year – for the 1-1 contest.

Indiana State would then reclaim its lead in the seventh. After a leadoff walk and a sacrifice bunt, the Sycamores would finally take advantage of their first hit of the game when a two-out single gave the visitors a 2-1 edge. However, like they did all weekend, the Braves immediately answered ISU's scoring with Husmann's heroics in the bottom of the frame en route to the 5-3 victory.

King finished the game with just one earned run and one hit allowed in 6.2 innings of work – striking out a career-best 11 batters in the process. Junior Eli Campbell earned his first win of the season for BU, pitching 1.0 inning as the three Bradley pitchers combined to allow just two Indiana State hits on the day.

The Braves look to maintain their momentum in Valley play and move into position for a first-round bye with a road series at Valparaiso. The three-game set is slated to begin on Friday with a 3 p.m. first pitch.
