Box Score MURRAY, Ky. -- If Bradley sophomore Rob Scahill (Lombard, Ill./Willowbrook H.S.) had any rust after sitting out the entire 2007 as a medical redshirt, it did not show Saturday. Making his first appearance since 2006, Scahill was overpowering in Bradley's 5-3 second-game victory at Murray State (0-2), helping the Braves (2-0) to an opening-day sweep at Reagan Field.
Bradley won Saturday's season-opener, 2-1, behind a complete-game pitching effort by sophomore Brad Altbach.
In the nightcap Scahill (1-0), a 6-foot-1 righthander, allowed just one hit in 6.0 scoreless innings and struck out eight. After junior Kori Jensen (Wichita, Kan./Goddard H.S.), a transfer from Hutchinson County C.C., relieved Scahill to start the seventh and allowed three runs on three hits and a pair of walks, junior righthander Tyler Thornton (Minier, Ill./Olympia H.S.) induced a game-ending double play to earn his first save of the year.
The Braves grabbed a 1-0 lead in the second inning. Junior rightfielder Colby Luttrell (Kincaid, Ill./South Fork H.S.) led off the second with a triple and scored on a wild pitch from Murray State starter Jake Donze (0-1).
With Donze allowing only one hit in his 4.0 innings of work, the game remained 1-0 until the fifth, when the Braves pushed across two more runs. Marc Harmon relieved Donze after the ?Breds starter walked a pair to put runners at first and second with one out to start the fifth.
Junior third baseman Dan Brewer (Brookfield, Ill./Lyons Township H.S.), a preseason All-Missouri Valley Conference pick, greeted the new hurler with a double to left field, plating Matt Fritz (Northbrook, Ill./Glenbrook North H.S.) from second for a 2-0 lead. Pinch-runner Nick Popescu (Flower Mound, Texas/Flower Mound H.S.), a midyear transfer from Mississippi State, scored from third on a wild pitch for the 3-0 lead.
Brewer helped give the Braves two necessary insurance runs in the seventh inning by drawing a leadoff walk and advancing to third when Grant Escue (Washington, Ill./Washington H.S.), a transfer from Stanford, followed with a single to right field. Catcher Nick Mitidiero (Lockport, Ill./Lockport Township H.S.) drove Brewer home with a sacrifice fly, plating what proved to be the winning run for a 4-0 lead. Escue later stole second, advanced to third on a ground ball and scored on a wild pitch, the fourth time the Braves scored on a wild pitch in the doubleheader.
The teams will conclude their three-game, season-opening series with a single game at 1 p.m. Sunday. The Braves then will return to the Bluegrass State next weekend for a pair of 11 a.m. (CT) doubleheaders at Eastern Kentucky.
