Box Score MILLINGTON, Tenn. ? Three Bradley pitchers combined to limit Memphis to one run on five hits while striking out 10 and senior left fielder Grant Escue was 2-for-4 with two runs scored, leading the Braves (2-0) to a 5-1 victory versus Memphis (1-1) during day two of the Service Academy Spring Classic at USA Stadium.
Bradley senior right-hander Collin Brennan limited the Tigers to one unearned run on just two hits in 4.1 innings before reaching his early-season pitch count. Freshman Brandon Stevens (1-0) earned the win by tossing 1.2 innings of hitless relief and freshman Jacob Booden secured the save by firing 3.0 innings of scoreless relief. Booden allowed three hits and struck out four.
The Braves struck for three runs in the bottom of the first, which began with junior second baseman Matt Fritz getting hit by a pitch for the second straight game. Escue followed with a single to right and both players advanced an extra base on an error in the outfield. Nick Mitidiero brought Fritz home with a ground out, and after Escue took third on a passed ball, Colby Luttrell brought him home on another ground out. Designated hitter Adam Kimble kept the inning going with a 2-out single and Friday's 10th-inning hero, first baseman Jim Clayton made it 3-0 by following with an RBI double into right centerfield.
Memphis loaded the bases with one out in the third inning on a double, Tommy Fitzgerald throwing error at shortstop and a walk by Brennan. A second straight walk forced in a run, but Brennan got out of the jam without allowing any more runs by inducing a groundball double play.
Escue helped get the run back in the bottom of the third by singling through the left side of the infield to open the frame. Mitidiero followed with a walk and the Bradley tandem executed a double steal to put runners at second and third with no outs. Luttrell drove home his second run of the game with another RBI ground out.
Brennan retired the last four batters he faced, two by strikeouts to open the fourth, before giving way to Stevens, who was recruited to Bradley as a catcher. Stevens proved his worth on the mound, however, picking up the win in his first career appearance.
Bradley picked up an insurance run in the sixth on a 2-out, solo home run by Fitzgerald, his first as a Brave. Booden took care of the rest, despite giving up a leadoff single in each of his three innings. He struck out two in both the seventh and eighth innings, then got a pair of ground outs and a fly out in the ninth to nail down the save in his first career appearance.
After rain forced the cancellation of both of Bradley's scheduled games against Kansas during the Service Academy Spring Classic, the Braves will close out its participation in the event by facing Navy in a 10 a.m. game Sunday.
