Kaboom! Awards: Special Recognition Award

Drs. Jessica Higgs and Renee Patton share the annual Bradley Athletics Special Recognition Award

Presented by RE/MAX Traders Unlimited and supported by PNC, the 2021 Kaboom! Awards continue with the presentation of the annual Bradley Athletics Special Recognition Award.

Playing a major role in helping Bradley University's student-athletes and staff navigate the COVID-19 global pandemic, Drs. Jessica Higgs and Renee Patton are co-recipients of the annual Bradley Athletics Special Recognition Award, announced Tuesday afternoon as part of the department's 2-week virtual presentation of the year-end Kaboom! Awards.

The primary team physician for Bradley Athletics, Dr. Higgs has completed her eighth year as the Director of Health Services, Family Medicine/Sports Medicine at Bradley University. In addition to her daily activities on campus for the entire Bradley University community, Dr. Higgs works closely with the Department of Athletics Sports Medicine staff and provides medical supervision at all home competitions for the Braves. She also has served as the lead physician for the Missouri Valley Conference COVID-19 Working Group this past year.

"Dr. Jessica Higgs has played a vital role in the health and safety of not only our student-athletes and staff at Bradley University, but for the entire Missouri Valley Conference during this global pandemic," said Dustin Vissering, Bradley University Associate Athletic Director for Athletic Training Services. "Thank you, Dr. Higgs, for your commitment and dedication in keeping our entire student body and faculty safe. Your generosity and willingness to help others is admirable."

Now in her fifth year at Bradley University as a staff counselor, Dr. Patton is a licensed clinical professional counselor. Among her University responsibilities, Dr. Patton works directly with Bradley student-athletes to assist them with the mental health challenges associated with the collegiate student-athlete experience. She also serves as a tremendous resource for coaches and staff, helping to optimize the support services for the student-athletes and maximize overall wellness and performance.

"Dr. Renee Patton is an absolute joy to work with," said Vissering. "The way she has stepped up for our student-athletes during the course of this year, a year of unknowns, has been incredible. Renee has continually shown that she has the ability to positively impact student-athletes in and out of their competitive environments."

The 2021 Kaboom! Awards, presented by RE/MAX Traders Unlimited and supported by PNC, will continue Wednesday with the announcement of the Charles Orsborn Award finalists, as well as the presentation of the Megan C. Fong Inspiration Award. The annual awards announcements began Monday with the Coach Joe Stowell Awards: Taylor Ledwein of Women's Golf and Dan Bolt of Baseball. The Varsity Club Most Outstanding Male and Female Athletes will be announced Thursday and the annual awards presentations will conclude Friday with the announcement of the Charles Orsborn Award.
